Abstract

The commentary deals with the concept of values in the culturalist, value-based approach to political culture research. It is argued that focusing on values as the main aspect of the society’s political culture can be justified by the heuristic power of the concept of values. Yet, several shortcomings in the conception of values in the political culture studies are stressed. The rather ad-hoc content of values, the assumption of the early-life formation and the deprivation-based view are debated and evaluated against the mainstream socio-psychological studies of values. The implications of the theoretical stances regarding values in terms of the relationship between culture and structure are further discussed. The need for increased awareness of the methodological / measurement and explanatory limitations in the study of values is voiced.
